In many countries there are organizations that arrange sled dog trials with wheeled carts when there is no show. Under the supervision of an experienced trainer with an understanding of the dog’s character the Alaskan Malmute can even take part in other sports such as agility. There have also been a few malmutes that performed well as avalanche search dogs and in . These sports should be done purely for fun, be cause this breed is usually outperformed by one of the sheepdog breeds.

The Alaskan Malmute has a powerful, compact body, with heavy bones and strong muscles. The level back slopes gently down from shoulder to hip and loins are muscular. The tail is set level with the topline and is carried above the back like a waving plume, not in a stiff curl or hanging down. The chest is deep. The legs are straight and muscular, heavy in bone, with large, compact feet. The Alaskan Malmute’s neck is strong and moderately arched.

The head is broad and powerful. The skull is broad between the ears and gradually narrows to the eyes. The large muzzle narrows slightly towards the fore-nose and is neither too snipey nor too full. The Alaskan Malmute’s ears are comparatively small and wedge-shaped. They are carried erect and forward when the dog is at attention, and are set at the side of the head. The eyes are almond-shaped. They are moderately large and set obliquely. Alaskan Malmute have a scissor bite.

The Alaskan Malmute has a double wiry coat; the outer coat is thick and coarse and the under-coat is dense, oily and wooly. In the summer months the coat is obviously shorter and less dense
Permitted dog colors are light gray to black, always with white on the belly and the legs. A cap-like or mask-like marking on the face is required and white spot on the neck or a white collar is permissible. A solid white coat color is also allowed, but is rare. There are also specimens with brownish coat. this color is not accepted world-wide. The eues are always brown. This is one of differential from Siberian Husky.

This intelligent dog breeds is fairly independent, friendly and loyal, but also dignified, with a mind of its own and can be dominant. Subervience is foreign to its nature. The average representative of the breed has plenty of self-confident and an equable disposition. It is sober and hardy with a coat that provides excellent protection against adverse weather conditions. it can be kept in an outdoor kennel, provided it has close contact with its handler or another dog.Alaskan Malmute do not like to be alone.

Alaskan Malmutes generally get on well iwth children, and they are friendly with everyone. This makes them totally unsuitable as watchdogs. They can display dominant behavior towards other dogs of the same sex, but this is the exception rather that the rule. The owner should be aware of this and strongly discourage his dog from an early age from displaying dominant behavior towards other dogs in the street. Cats are nit really suitable as companions in the same house, unless the dog has grown up with the cats since puppyhood. In this case there should be no problem. Because these dogs have a keen hunting instict it is advisable to socialize them with all kinds of other animals including cattle.

The weather-resistant coat of the Alaskan Malmute does not need a lot of grooming. Dirt and mud can be simply brushed off when dry. An Alaskan Malmute is a heavy shedder, particularly during the spring and the fall. During the molt it is best to use a coarse comb with a double row of metal teeth to remove loose hairs from the undercoat.

Despite its friendly nature, this dog breed needs a firm hand in its training, as the average malmute needs consistent supervision. A calm, equable handler who is physically strong and exudes a natural authority will get the best out of this breed. If these requirements are met, then Alaskan Malmutes are fairly obedient and capable of learning relatively many command quickly. Do bear in mind, though that the exercise should be fun for the dog. Monotonous drills will inevitably lead to protests and the dog will simply refuse to do them. During the training particular attention should be paid to the “come here” command. Alaskan Malmutes are good eaters, and using food as a reward will help you achieve great results. Good socialization which should ideally begin with the breeder, has a very positive influence on character building, but the opposite is also true.

Alaskan Malmute exercise

Perhaps the most important aspect of keeping an Alaskan Malmute, apart from attention and company is its huge exercise needs. If you do not fancy taking the dog out for a run or a brisk walk for an hour each day then you should look for a different dog breed!

When taking your Alaskan Malmute for off-leash walks, you should make sure that it is well-trained and can be recalled promptly.

    my favorite breed of all time. Were they not alot larger at one time? A breeder in Wash state say they were usally as big as 185 Lbs and I saw one of her pups at 120lbs at about 6 months.
