The Smooth Dachshund is the original strain of the . The Wire-haired and long-haired were attained by crossing the Smooth Dachshund with other breeds. Occasionally, a litter is born in which one or more puppies turn out to be a different variety to that of their parents. If there is any doubt about the correct size of the adult dog, then the body size is measured just behind the elbows and if necessary, the pedigree is adjusted accordingly.

The Dachshund has long, high withers, a level back, slightly arched loins and a long, broad and muscled croup.The Dachshund’s tail forms a continuation of the top-line and must not be too curved.The Dachshund belly is moderately tucked up.The straight legs are well angulated and parallel. The feet are close, with arched toes. The dry, muscular neck is carried high and has a slight arch.

The long head gradually tapes uniformly towards the tip of the nose, but is not pointed. The stop is not prominent – the less prominent, the best and the nose bridge is slightly arched.   • The miniature Dachshund has a chest size of 11½ – 13½ ( 30 – 35 cm ) and wighs from 11 -15 lg ( 5- 7 Kg )
  • The Kaninchen or little rabbit Dachshund has a chest of size les than 11½ inc ( 30 cm ) and weighs approx 8 ¾ lb ( 4kg )

The smooth Dachshund has a short, dense like Miniature Pinscher, sleek hair that lies flat on the body. The whole body of the Wire-haired Dachshund is covered wit a close, dense, wiry coat and a dense undercoat. The muzzle is furnished with a beard and a mustache, and the eyebrows are bushy. The hair variety. Long-haired Dachshund have a long. glossy, smooth and silky coat. The feathering is longer on the lower part of the body, the trousers, the tail and the ears.

Dachshunds are lively and known for their intelligence, resourcefulness and cleverness. They are not the most obedient of dogs and can be will full in an almost comical fashion. These dogs are full of contrasts. They display great courage, toughness and tenacity in the field, but in a family setting like their home comforts, crave attention and are visibly deeply upset by harsh words. They are devoted to their owners and do not like being left alone, although they do have a tendency to take off on their own if they are gripped by their . Most Dachshund are fairly energetic and active, but not boisterous. A Dachshund will bark when it hears unfamiliar noises ant he bravest specimens will not shrink from stopping intruders in their tracks. These dogs have an excellent nose. They are determined in their behavior once Dachshunds have set their minds on something, they are very skillful at manipulating their owners

Its own people come first and the Dachshund has little time for strangers. This is shown by a rather reserved manner towards people the dog does not know. When socialized with children it tends to get on well with them, but it will not tolerate being used as a plaything. Since we cannot expect too much from very young children in this respect, a Dachshund is generally better suited to a family with older kids, Dachshund usually get on well with other dogs but will put up a fight if challenged. Because of its strong hunting instinct, this dog breed is not suitable as a pet with small pets such as rabbits. However, a Dachshund can live in harmony with cats provided the dog has been properly socialized with them from an early age.

The Dachshund has a mind of its own and is strong-willed, a temperament that calls for a consistent training. With plenty of patience and understanding, it is possible to teach a Dachshund a great deal, although it will never slavishly follow your command.Dachshund can be very upset and may sulk if they feel they have been punished unfairly. It is advisable to take your Dachshund to a good puppy training course and possibly to a follow-up course as well. It will help build its character if a Dachshund is introduced to all kinds of people, animals and situations.
