Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie, for short looks like a miniature copy of the Scottish sheepdog. Its body is slightly longer than tall. The chest reaches down to the elbows. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie’s ribs are well arched, although they taper a little down-ward. the tail is set low and reaches at least to the hocks. Usually it is carried slightly upward in a curve, but shold not be raised above the top-line. The well-angulated legs are straight and have strong bones. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie’s feet are oval shaped and have tighly closed anbd arched toes. Shelties have well-arched necks, long enough to carry their heads prodly.

It is long and wedge-shaped, with a flat skull between the ears flat cheecks that flow into the round muzzle. Muzzle and skull are equal in length. From the side they appear to run parallel and are separated by a slight stop. the high-set ears are small and triangular and when the dog is barking they are carried erect, with dropping tips. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie’s almond-shaped eyes are set in the head.

Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie might be sable ( from light gold-colored to mahogany with or without black tips ), tricolor ( black , with tan markings and white ) , blue merle silver blue background with black markings and possibly warm brown markings,black brown, and black white. All these dog colors with the eception of black brown , should preferably be combined with a white chest, ruff,blaze, legs and tip of tail. white markings on other places are not desirable at shows. The eyes will be dark brown in theory, but blue berles may have one or two partially blue colored-eyes. the forenose is black.

Sheltie are extremely intelligent and smart dogs. If they are trained in the right way they will wuickly learn commands and they will be obedient, too, but a little stubbornness is also part of very active. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie will bark noisily when they sense a danger. They are very faithful to their owners and members of the family and very devoted, too. This dog breed tends to stik to their territory, which means thay they are not inclined to leave your property of their own accord. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie prefer to be near to their families and therefore they are not suited to life in a kennel.

As a rule mixing with other dogs, livestock, cats, and other pets does not cause any problems. It is not overtly difficult to care for this dog breed, but weekly brushing is essential. Their hair tends to tangle behind the ears, in the armpits and culottes. These areas need some more attention. During the molt session the shelties loses a lot of hair and it will be necessary to brush your dog thoroughly down to the skin once every other day to remove dead and loose hairs.

This type of dog is quite trainable. A Shelti like being taught and enjoys following commands. You need to train this dog gently and consistently. A sheltie will adapt to circumtances, but if it gets nervy, it means that it has not had enough exercise for weeks. Shetland Sheepdog or Sheltie need more that a quick trot round the corner three times a day. Wind or rain does not bother sheltis. They love ball games and retrieving and its good to allow them to let off steam off-leash. They do not tend to stray from dog owner and do not have much hunting instinct. A romp in natural surroundings can therefore be a relaxing time.
