  • Most dogs naturally assume a sitting position to keep an eye on something above them. If your dog does not, hold its collar in one hand and use your other hand to tuck its hindquarters into a sitting position. Give the command “Sit” as you do this and instantly reward the dog with a food treat and a verbal “good dog”. Eventually you will give the “Sit” command when you are walking with your dog and you stop, or when it is playing and you want its attention.
  • Avoid overexcitement. If meals are so exciting that your dog cannot concentrate on your commands, do not use the meal as a reward. Train on a fuller stomach, using less stimulating but still interesting rewards
  • Never give a command without ensuring that your dog complies. If you do so, you are actively training your dog to disregard that command.

I love the last thing that you mentioned. It’s what I stress and stress to my clients when teaching obedience or behavioral issues. You never want to set your dog up to fail because then you are giving them the option to obey you and you will get very frustrated. I rarely come across other people who take the time to point that out so thank you for that!

One more thing that I would add is that dog owners need to repeat this over and over. Just because your puppy or dog gets it a few times, you need to keep working on this. Work on it while you are walking your dog. Make them sit at curbs before crossing the street. If you need to let someone walk by, make them sit. If someone wants to pet your dog, make them sit first. Make them sit to put their collar and leash on. The list can go on and on. Don’t forget to keep working on this basic command.
