Some tips on how to use a dog training collar :

  • The flat dog training collar with its quick release feature is typically used in training a dog using a leash.
  • Slip collars, also known as choke collars or slip chains are basically a chain or nylon rope with rings placed at both ends so that the dog training collar can be looped around the upper part of the dog’s neck. The ring at the other end then goes over the top of the neck and not down under. As the leash is attached, your dog will not be in danger of being choked with it.
  • Prong collars are a set of chain links with safely blunted ends that is positioned toward a dog’s neck. The design of this particular dog training collar functions with its limited circumference unlike the slip collar type. The purpose of the limited traction and the prong’s angle is to discourage the dog from pulling away because of the blunted pressure present against it’s neck. If the prongs face away from your dog’s skin, then it will be at risk against body and head injuries. Plastic tips can also be used to secure from injury risks aside from the blunted prong.

Just like the slip collar, the prong type is positioned high above the dog’s neck just behind the ears. Some dogs though are known to free themselves from by simply shaking their heads vigorously until the links pop out, which prompted some owners with a second collar, usually a slip collar so that their dogs will never get loose.

  • The Martingale dog training collar are best for sighthounds because of their rather smaller heads when compared to their necks. Other types of training collars can be useless in this case as it can slip off easily. But the Martingale type is perfectly suitable for any type of dog. The no-slip feature made it stand out among others, and has become a safety standard in most animal shelters. This particular dog training collar has two different loops, with the smaller one considered as a control loop to prevent slipping.
  • The head halters collar are just similar to the horse halter in design. It is fastened over the muzzle all the way up to the back of the neck.

There are more varieties of the dog training collar that are worth considering, like the sophisticated shock and wolf collars, each with their own sets of advantages. Rest assured there is always one out there that best addresses you and your dog’s specific needs and demands.
