Allow me to share some tips for masters of lively German Shepherds that usually jump on anything and anybody.

Jumping may seem like an act of joy or exuberance. While he’s small, you may be tempted to indulge your German Shepherd and let him jump, but do not do it. He may grow to be a really large dog and still have this habit. As your dog grows up, you should curb this behavior.

One thing that you should know is that this sort of training needs rewards. Special training means you must prepare goodies to treat him with. But tread lightly when your puppy is supposed to be trained as a protection dog later on.

The Right Order is Vital

To stop German Shepherd jumping is in fact not all that difficult to achieve. Always have a reward ready for when your dog learns to restrain himself. The primary goal, stop German Shepherd jumping, can be initiated from either on or off lead. If you use the lead, place yourself behind your dog so you can restrain him physically. When you see signals of jumping, pull down on the lead. Physical act should be accompanied by verbal command. Keep the lead close to the floor while shushing the dog and giving treats. If you yell, the dog will feel panicked. Offer the treat before you begin the training once more. Don’t become frustrated if the dog does not respond well the first few times you try this method. Like humans, repetitions are needed for training. Your German Shepherd will get it soon enough. Be very wary of which verbal commands you use.  Never use the command “down” to correct the jumping behavior. “Down” is to be used when you want the dog to lay flat on the floor or ground.

If you’re training without a lead, the method may be different. When your dog acts like he’s going to hump, hold up your hand in front of his nose and say the command. When the rearing is abated, treat the dog with a treat. When you use the word “no” and your right hand is in front of your dog’s nose, continue the hand to the bottom and announce the command “down”.  Your dog will become uncomfortable when you firmly lie him down and will do as you say.
